Sphagnum moss is typically used as a substrate for animals that are from damp areas - tropical or subtropical areas. Mexicana are found in arid mountainous regions and deserts. I think sphagnum moss probably holds too much moisture for arid species, but if you want to use it totally dry, I don't think that will create too many problems. You might want to feed the snake in a separate container so it doesn't ingest the moss when eating.

I like those gray sides, almost has that "speckled" look to it.

I agree with Tom that in a moist environment Sphagnum is good. I use it inside my hide boxes when one goes into shed. However, I do notice when it's dry, it breaks down easily and creates a fine dust, which may lead to respiratory problems later. I wouldn't use it in an arid environment as a substrate but for a moist corner or hide, it's great.

I agree with what BG said about sphangum moss, it does make a great wet hide for colubrids in shed phase. However, for a substrate their are way better and safer options unless it's a tropical species.
That is a great looking mex mex and I wish you would post some more pictures. VERY NICE!
