Bairds rat comparison shots

Kevin Saunders Feb 07, 2005 11:08 AM

My bairds have been changing pretty fast, so I took some new pics this weekend to compare with an old one. They looked much better before I resized them, but hopefully the differences will still show. They're all of my male since the female hides a lot and is harder to find. This was what he looked like a few weeks after I got him back in September.

Here he is now. He's getting all kinds of color between his scales, but it doesn't show too well in the pic. His crossbars have faded a lot also.

Jimmy(draybar), my male has lots of color between his scales and the female is completely silver still. They're still young to tell, but if she's gonna get more color, it's developing much slower. Mine are siblings to Sam and Rosie, so I was hoping they'd end up similar looking. You may be on to something with the gender-influenced color differences, at least in this bloodline. This picture just shows the longitudinal striping Bruce is starting to get. At the moment, his stripes are more defined than hers also.

From what I've seen the males tend to have more color, atleat at an earlier age anyway. Here is my 04 male, about the same age as yours.

Hard to get the color between the scales to come out unless the light is hitting right. Kevin, both of your Bairdi are looking very nice. Between your female & male, they are both going to be beautiful as adults, with eatch one turning out different. Heck, not two turn out the same from their own clutch.

Between my typing errors and not reading your post more carefully, I just realized both pictures are of your male Bairdi. I guess I can't complement your female if she's not even in the picture, LOL. So I'll try this again. Kevin, your male Bairdi is outstanding looking. They do change a great deal in such a short amount of time.

No problem, it looks like yours has pretty wide crossbars (compared to mine at least). It'll be cool to see how that affects the final color/pattern. I'll try to get some shots of my female next weekend for comparison.

Wait until their about two years old, that's when the major colour changes are really showing. If your lucky and have a bairds that keeps getting bigger and bigger then the colours seem to show up even more from between the scales. I saw an adult pair of bairds not too long ago that were over 6 feet long and the effect was amazing. Keep taking pics and in a couple of years look back at them in sequence. I love bairds ratsnakes, the colours are subtle yet vibrant, definitely one of my all time favourites.
