Curious-did i miss something???

jcmonitor Feb 07, 2005 04:12 PM

Did anyone else notice the rather large insurgence of captive bred water monitors and monitors in general in the classifieds forum?

I'm just having a hard time believing this to be true with limited number of breeders out there with the know-how and accommodations to properly raise and keep large sexually mature waters, never mind the fact that every other add is showing true cb, 100% cbb this, and home grown that????

I mean wth?

Did I miss something where everyone had success in breeding this season, with multiple variety?

Sorry that this is just a rant; but I'm just, well, a little disappointed. I put a lot of pride and effort into providing my buyers with the hatch date and background info of my captive bred Boscs, not that it seemingly made any difference as to how fast they sold or what not; but there are some ad's that are just pure fabrication and it's very discouraging. Especially when I get asked thing's like why am I placing said dollar value on what I have when someone else is offering the "same" thing for less. I say look at the pictures do you really think example A. is a note worthy specimen of cbb? and then you have my breeding picts, my setup picts, the incubator picts, I mean all this backup and I'm getting compared to a $5 dollar dying wild caught import. I just don't get it. In this market the cliché, "you get what you pay for" is never more appropriate, but has the growing hobby population really degraded that much where this is being tolerated? I just feel like emailing some sellers and asking them to post copulation picts, parental picts, hatching picts up with their ad.

Oh well, I know this is an old rant but I just had to get it off my chest.
Cheers

JC

Yup, this is a strategy that dealers use to sell wild caught crap to unsuspecting buyers; it's been going on for years....

I remember when back in the day CB stood for CAPTIVE BRED, and not 'captive born' or captive hatched, as it is interpreted/used by dealers today. This leads to the confusion and deception... Many of these "cb" babies, are actually hatched out in farms now, overseas, where the adult females are captured while gravid, and held until they drop their eggs. The females are either released afterwards, or skinned...

The majority of reptile keepers buy animals on impulse, because they are cheap, and 'expendable'. While that may not represent the people who come to these forums to learn and share experiences, it does constitute the majority of the reptile keeper population.. Most of these people do not care whether an animal is captive bred or not, or they simply do not see a difference between them. These people are not experienced or knowledgeable to see through dealer's ploys to make a sale.
It is sad, but these inexperienced/unsuspecting buyers will just go out and buy another one when their animal dies, and continue the never ending cycle.

Honestly, if I were you, I would not sweat people complaining about why your animals cost more than what the dealers are selling their 'cb' offspring for, as dedicated, knowledgeable enthusiasts would rather come to you for true CB animals, as opposed to WC crap. Personally, I would not want to sell my captive bred animals to people who are most likely going to kill them..

It's a really sad scenario, but if mass importation of such species continues, I don't see a 'market' ever developing for true CB animals, except for the true and dedicated hobbyists that have some idea of what they're doing; Not Joe Schmoe who has his savanah monitor in a rubbermaid container in his ball python rack...

Cheers mate,

I thought a naming convention was created to account for the differences people used in interpreting the use of CB? Is this convention not being accepted as the reptile industry standard anymore or did it never really take off the ground?

WC = wild caught (obviously)
CB = catpive hatched/born but not captive bred
CBB = captive bred AND born/hatched

Being used by so many as captive born, captive hatched the term CBB captive bred and born was created by people who actually breed or sell captive bred animals so you could tell the difference, but just anyone claims CBB on any WC animal anymore, liars and crooks, should be able to post their scams for all to read, but this site doesnt allow that because those businesses pay for advertising, therefore they are business associates, a catch 22.

I can sure feel for your frustration. There will always be people looking for the cheapest pet. But, as someone who is still fairly new in the reptile world, I can tell you that there is an increasing number of people who believe in buying true captive bred and born animals from breeders like yourself.

While I never intended to own a sav, I truly am fascinated by my probably wild caught rescue. I'd love another one, and I had hoped to buy one of yours, but my husband pointed out that with the new bearded dragon eggs I've got incubating and with more to come, I've got no space left for anything of any size! Darn! I need a bigger house! (I've already kicked the kids out....)

Seriously, enjoy and take pride in the quality animals you are producing. Forget about the idiots that will buy anything, as long as they can get it cheap. Some people just never learn, but there are people out here that appreciate your hard work. Hang in there!

If you advertised CB monitors of whatever species, your competition would remove his old adds, or take new pics then repost the add with a higher price but below your price to sell them as CB or CBB. Its a chain reaction, then everyone and their mother advertises CB or CBB monitors because the average buyer will believe it and buy it at that low price, the saying "theres a sucker born every minute" relates directly. This happens with many snake species as well, those CB eastern hognose from FLA etc are good examples, the ones that only eat frogs and toads not mice. I wish the people of this industry were more honorable, put more quality in their animals, and truth in their sales pitch. If they did we might have more than a few regularly bred species to pick from that are CBB. If they claim CB or CBB ask them for proof, if they cant prove it, then move on, works great, gets alot of negative remarks in your email, or threats, oh well, shows you who not to deal with.
