Measuring turtles

I've never really been involved with people who were interested in the size of my turtles. The vet always did their check up and we never really discussed sizes, but, how do you measure a turtle? Is it head to tail tip? Or the size of their shell.

I always just describe my guys as "1/4 lb hamburger size and up."

The way we measure turtles for state records is the straight line from the front of the shell to the back (doesnt include the curve)

In the image below, the length of the red bar would be the length of the turtle
