Signs Iguana in Breeding Season

MikeT66 Feb 07, 2005 07:20 PM

What are some signs that an Iguana is in the Breeding season? My Ig has recently stopped eating as much, turning orange in color, very restless trying to get out of cage all the time is not pooping as much. When he is not trying to bust out the cage he just chills and sleeps most of the day. If this is what is happening how long does it last and is there anything I can put in the cage (besides a female Ig) to help him along. This is a very informative forum and any help and advise you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like breeding season to me. There's not much to do except for wait it out. However, my male ig seems to enjoy the company of stuffed animals or a pair of jeans. May be strange, but he calms down a little afterwards.

Lol! Yeah, no kidding. I've actaully heard of people buying iguana replicas for their male igs. My iguana will even try to mate with himself in a mirror... That's the weirdest thing...
My vet has said that it is possible to neuter an ig, and fix the breeding season troubles, but it's also a very rare and expensive procedure. I've never really liked neutering any of my animals though, except when it was a must with my cats. Plus with iguanas, as they get older, the breeding season issues calm down. My 15yr old male went through crazy breeding season when he was 4 and 5, but by the time he was 10, he would have shorter seasons.

We are going throu the same thing with Tiny. I asked all of the same questions and got the same answer... you must wait it out. I think Tiny is coming out of it because the restlessness is slowing down. He is very young so I also think he THINKS he is a big ig but really he is a teenager ig. ha ha
Good luck
