Possible Eggbound, or just not ready?

dmlove Feb 07, 2005 08:31 PM

Well one of my females that I bough gravid is well along her way with eggs. (The seller and myself did not know she was producing eggs when she was sold). She hasnt been eating a whole lot at all and has been laying on the bottom of the cage. I brought her to a vet a few weeks ago, and he said she wasnt eggbound then, but obviously that could change. Im thinking about bringing her to a vet soon, or should I wait? She isnt digging around, and does nothing when I set her in the laying bin. I dont know if she has ever had eggs before. she is 19 months old.

Any experienced advice would be appreciated.

I have never had a eggbound beardie, but I have lost water dragons too eggbinding. They would spend hours digging and digging and trying to lay, and sometimes would lay a few, but then get weaker and weaker. My vet sucked, when I brought them to him he would just say, they would either lay them soon or "reabsorb" them, and have no problem. Anyway, if your beardie isn't acting frantic or weak, she is probably fine, although a beardie breeder will probably know more than I do.

eggbinding will kill any reptile, i dont know what that vet was talking about "resorb them", they dont disappear, they die and rot inside the lizard and the lizard will go into toxic shock from mold growing inside her body, i wouldnt go back to that vet ever again if i was you and i would make some calls to see if he should be banned from seeing reptiles ever again...anyways that aside bud, from the pic she is not gravid yet you will know when she is gravid, it will look like a whole bunch of little rocks all over her insides. when she starts doing nothing but digging within a week or so of you really seeing the lumps it is time to mover her to a secluded ( not dark ) area, quite and no other reptiles in the room, a low traffic area of your house. keep her on her regular light cycle as she could be in there for a few days. keep providing food but she will most likely not eat. for the egg laying bedding, i have found that the cheepest potting soil is what my beardies prefer, i buy 99 cent bags of kmart brad pute potting soil, NO CHEMICALS OR MIRACLE GROW ADDED!! make it just moist enough that it wont collapse on her when she digs the tunnel, not sloppy wet though. and point a low whattage bulb at the center or the slope, by the way slope the bedding up against one side of container, i use a 30 gallon tupperware sytle colored tub, what she cant see through the sides cant distract her, no lid on top and a clip lamp with a 40 watt light buld is what i use. sorry this is so long but i wanted to help the best i could!! i have been doing this for about 2 years now and have made a nice chunk of change on the side from it, aside from the sheer satisfaction of doing something like this.... good luck!!!

Hey - Thanks for the reply. I have been doing this for many years now, and she is definetly gravid. I palpated her, and can feel many eggs. That photo was an old on of her. Im afraid that she may not start digging as many of my other females do, because Im not sure if she is totally "normal" or not, as in, neuorologically challenged. She is so much different than others. Its hard to explain. She may not dig, I have had her in her laying box on and off the past week, but she just sits in there as well. When shes in her cage she hardly moves around, and she is cutting off eating. I know this is a sign of either severe weakness or gravid. Thanks for the reply.

Hey David,

How far along is she? You have some of the worst luck with this lol. You basically know the routine, I'm not sure that there is much I can tell you but I'll give it a shot.

Hey Sean. I know I have, its a curse or something! It gets extremely frustrating. This is the SECOND ADULT FEMALE I have bought that is possibly becoming eggbound. I guess Ive gotta learn, don't buy adult females, lol. I think she is about 2 weeks or so at least. I'm guessing she has had a clutch before, and this is the second clutch from a breeding before I bought her. I am talking with my vet and we are hoping to maybe use a drug (last resort) to induce labor. She doesnt have paralyzed legs, however, so Im not extremely worried. Ill let you know how it goes.

Ok, ya if she's only 2-3 weeks I'd give it another week before you hit the pitocin and hopefully she'll lay on her own. Good luck to ya man.

sorry bro, totally misunderstood the question I guess....and I didnt see your ensignia at the bottom...woops, I havent had the eggbinding prob yet, but my wife has seen it at work and i will as her if there is anything else that can be done, she is asleep now so it will be tomorrow morning before i can talk to her...GOOD LUCK

dmlove Feb 10, 2005 08:03 PM

Thanks man - No problem. That would be great if you could ask her if there is anything else that can be done, more advice the better! I think as of now I am going to wait a little bit longer and see if she will do it on her own. If not, to the vet she goes. She is showing a little weakness and lack of appetite/concentration, so I think it may be sooner than later!

Later man - You can contact me off board @ dmlove660@yahoo.com if she does have anything to say!

whoa man sorry took so long!! been extremly busy and my comp crashed friday night, power flashed while I was at work and my wife thrashed the comp trying to get it started back up....anyways, she says there is not much else to do, they try not to induce and have actually never had to. it can kill the beardie, i hope that by now your prob is solved as it is sunday night now.....if not i would probably get her checked out, and keep lettering soak in warm water....GOOD LUCK BRO!
