gahhh my leo just attacked his girlfriend and my finger!

CCappy175598 Feb 07, 2005 10:21 PM

I just did a quick clean of all my tanks and put new paper towels down. When I went back to my adult leos' tank i found my male chopping down on one of my females tale. Ive never seen them breed before and I know it could get violent but this was nuts. He looked more interested in chewing on her tale then getting it on. So I tried to seperate him. (meanwhile the female isn't doing anything about it just sitting still). When I finaly seperate them he turns real quick and grabs me by the finger and wouldn't let go for a while, chopping down over and over at times. He drew blood. I dont like him much anymore. Do I need anykind of shot or anything? And what made him act so violently?

wow. first of all you did right to get him off her even at the expense of your finger. Anyone who says a leo bite can't hurt you has never been bit by a pissed-off adult male. I have the scars that say different.

And I assume you did NOT put him back in with her? Cause chomping tails is not normal mating behavior. Mating bites by the male are SMALL BITES, just to grab a fold of skin. But sometimes the female will react by attacking the male, if she's not ready to mate and he is making a pest of himself. Then he might react to her attack by attacking back. That's the only explanation I can think of. (either that or he is evil) Does the male have any bite injuries?

And if you do put them back together, I suggest you only do it while you are watching, and not leave the male in with her all the time any more.

I dont think you need a shot. wash it clean and apply Neosporin.

yeah they are seperated and hes staying in the kritter keeper tonight! hah. That will show him. Nothing like this has ever happened. I mean maybe it could have been breeding because he was chopping on like a little fold of skin but it seemed viscious to me. Shes not the one that started bleeding though... I washed it with hot water and soap and put loads of neosporin so hopefully my finger wont fall off or turn green or something crazy. But anyway, Im not to happy with him. I always thought he was homosexual because no matter what I tried they never would breed. He has no bite marks on him and neither have my females so I dont even think they've tried. But thats ok, I have enough little guys running around and I think now, I've decided its not worth my Lolla's pretty tail to put them back together. Thanks. :]

ah, Leo time out. yes it serves him right.

I think you're right not to try to breed that pair anymore. sometimes a certain male and female just do not get along.

hey I just thought of soemthing else. have you ever tried breeding her with anyone else? she may be a "hot" female, I'm not sure how to describe what that is, but they often refuse to breed ever, and the males have a confused reaction to hot females, like not sure to breed or kill. why didnt I think of that before? but if shes been bred to other males successfully, then that's not it.

i thought of that too. but she didn't react at all. like I thought she'd do something about him biting her, but she just stayed there. She is a little loopy so I dont know. She gets along with the other female fine. And usually everyone gets along. They lay on one other and stuff. I dont know. She is a spazz though. She runs up the walls and stuff when you try to pick her up. The others are fine.

Unless you know what she was incubated at it's hard to say if she could be a "hot female." I've only gotten bit by one leo and it's enough to cause you not to want to do it again. Compared to other animals it's not that bad but considering my bite was by a 110g male it kinda hurt..lol. Good luck with the geckos and your finger .
