Heat Question

LAF77 Feb 08, 2005 09:51 AM

I just became the proud father a corn and have a question about heat: For a 10 gallon tank whats the best wattage on a dayglo bulb and nighttime bulb. Right now the tank is consistent at about 80 on the warmer side. If I were to go w/ a UTH which wattage should I go with? And do thermostats work?

Thanks

Couple questions. How are you heating it right now? Are you planning on (continuing) to heat with bulbs or do you want to completely switch over to a UTH? I have my glass tanks all heated with just a blacklight bulb which is on 24/7. A thermostat will turn your light on and off, so what i would reccomend for light heating would be a rheostat, or a table lamp dimmer. You can go to home depot and get yourself a table lamp dimmer for $12 approx.

Now when you move over to a UTH, a thermostat is almost NECESSARY. And do they work? If they didn't would they be in such high demand??

As far as the UTH.. i'd go with the one that says for 10 gallons.

Getting a gradient in a 10 gallon tank is tough. I think the easiest thing to go, assuming you will be moving up to a bigger enclosure eventually, would be a uth, NOT stuck onto the bottom, and plugged into a dimmer switch. Then the snake has belly heat at least. You can check temps by laying the thermometer on the hot spot. You can move the uth to the next enclosure. The dimmer switch works like a rheostat and is simple to wire to an extension cord so you can control output on it. Costs under $10 for a three plug 6' extension, dimmer switch, cover plate and box.

I'd just go with the light for heat...its easy cheap and will work just fine for you corn. Depending on your room temp you could go with no heat and be fine.
