My geckos wont eat any mealies.

yellowconda12 Feb 08, 2005 11:45 AM

They walk up to them and smell them, sometimes they lick them but mostly they turn their heads in disgust. Kind of how I do when I accidently get a whiff of the mealies. And only one of my geckos touched the waxworms I put in their dishes. Any ones input appreciated, I would like to get a break from catching and ripping the legs off of crickets!

I know just from my experience with Leos is that they like live prey and specially when it is moving. I feed mine in the evening and I move everything out of the cage, which isnt much just the laying box and food/water dishes.

I have never taken the legs off of my geckos, also from my experience is that Geckos do not have the greatest eye sight, so the prey needs to move close enough for the gecko to see. I also feed them crickets every other day and mealworms all the time.

I usually dont see them eating the mealworms but I know they are eating becuase i have to refill the dishes every other day. Hope this helps.

thank you, for your information, just for clarification, I don't pull the legs off the gecko, I pull them offf the crickets, not all of them just the two big hoppers, Leo's in all of their glory are not fast animals as far as zooming around the cage to catch a large frightened cricket.

Put 10-20 active mealies in a dish in the evening.

If they don't eat it - take the dish out the next morning. Wait 2 days - and put it back in.

Repeat, until they start eating.

Unless they are sick - I guarantee you they will eat with gusto.

Plus, it won't hurt them at all.

The more you pester and worry over them - the less likely they are to eat.

Thank you for the info, I have been using seven mealies and about 5-4 waxworms. My geckos are juviniles and one adult that is new. How much should I feed my juvies?

My gecko used to only eat crickets and wouldn't touch mealies. I never pulled the legs off the crix, she'd just stalk them around her cage and hunt them down one by one.

Then a few months ago she stopped eating crickets and started eating mealies. Leo eyesight seems to be like a T-Rex's, they see something if it moves. So I usually hold the mealie between my thumb and forefinger in front of the leo so that the mealie will start rotating like a helicopter blade. This usually catches the leo's attention and they'll lunge for it. Otherwise I'll put the mealie on the ground and use a pen to nudge it around and the leo will lunge for it (sometimes she'll lunge for the pen and miss and get a mouthful of mealie instead )

Oh and the wax worm thing is just weird, my leo runs up and eats a wax worm even if it doesn't move. Maybe your leo is on a low-fat diet!
Good luck!
