Multiple iguanas - good idea?

razordance Feb 08, 2005 01:34 PM

We have a friend who has to get rid of his iguana. It's a 5-6 year old female, and although I haven't seen her yet, I think that there's a good possibility that she's not a green iguana. I've been told that her head is much larger in proportion to her body than what I thought was normal for a female green. (Rhino maybe? I don't know that much about other ig species). Anyway, we were trying to decide whether it would be feasable for us to take her in. We have Ike, a green iguana male who's going on 3 years. We're currently working up plans for a full sized enclosure for him. We'd end up having to build one for her as well, since the guy is keeping the enclosure she's currently in. At this point we figure that we'd keep them in seperate enclosures, since I know they're not all that social, and if there is a species difference that would be a big thing as well. I suspect that there would be quite a few times when they would both be free at the same time, and the enclosures would probably be pretty close to each other, although not visible to each other. Can anyone give advice on whether this is a good idea or not? If it's not, we'd rather make sure Ike gets the care he needs, but this girl needs a home and we'd like to be able to see that she gets a good one. I should mention that she doesn't get handled a lot currently, but we're told she's only aggressive when she's in heat. We'd have no intentions of breeding them, even if she does turn out to be a green, since I don't know whether we could find homes for baby igs. Ike is very unaggressive, hasn't attacked either of us, and has only tail whipped the cats a few times, even then it seems like more of a warning. Can anyone give me any advice on whether we should be seriously considering this? Thanks

If it's not another male, might not be a problem. And your male is young still, so a little easier to train. I just wouldn't put them in a cage together, or let them see each other right away. Then, just keep them supervised for a while.

If it does turn out to be one of the Cyclura Iguana species you can certainly try to keep both. My Cyclura get along well with my Green Iguanas, and even males of the two species tolerate each other well. You will, of course, have to take precautions about introducing them, but it could turn out very well. Just always remember, at any time the lizards could decide that they don't enjoy each other's company and you will have to be prepared to separate them, either temporarily or permanently.

we have 5 iguanas, 4 greens and a cuban rock

we recently aquired ceaser a green male which brought us to number 5, and boy did we name him good, he will elt you hold him, carry him and he will hang out with you, he is very mellow and even tempreed unless you have on yellow thenhe bites, but he hates the other iguanas, we keep him seperate from the rest,

now boris our green iguana and the largest male just loves everyone, hes so happy and friendly and he especially loves chaos our cuban rock , who tries to act mean but hes just a big baby . he does however have a foot fetish and will bite toes, especially if you are subconciously wiggling a bare foot,

boris and chaos get along really good and quite often visit each other in thier cages, or meet ont he back of the couch ,

our 2 little girls who are 2 and 3 and not very largy also love boris, they will spend all day trying to get out of thier cage and hang out with him, he doesnt seem to mind them at all,

we are ont he verge of letting the girls become free roamers which should be fun since chaos and boris already free raom anywhere they want and ceaser has the bathroom to himself,

i would never recomend putting 2 adult males together although we got lucky with boris and chaos , but ceaser tries to doninate, i think tis the name, we may rename him fluffy,LOL
