Has anybody ever been bitten by their snapper?

dressygal Feb 08, 2005 02:43 PM

My girl is still pretty small( just 6 inches) and has never shown agression whenh i pick her up or on land but she just attempted to "eat" my fingers through the tank glass. I'm going to stop hand feeding her, but I was just wondering if anybody has ever been bitten by their turtle and if it was painful.

Thanks.

Snappers have bitten plenty of their keepers. The bigger they get, the more it will hurt. At some point, they will be able to take your finger off. Be careful!

Mine is about as big as yours is. His feeding response is so healthy that I would not put my fingers within his reach while he is in his little frenzy. Once he gets a few minnows in him, I can pick him up. Once I have him in my hand, he does not try to bite me. So far.

I have 13 snakes, and I am more concerned about being bitten by my little snapper than any of them.

Why do you think they call 'em "snappers"? :D

I was bitten a few times when she was a hatchling and just learning the difference between me and the food! But now she is very gentle and will carefully pick a piece of Trout Chow from my fingers!

She doesn't try to bite me usually when I handle her. But I still carefully only hold her near her tail, just in case!

She did try to get me a few times when I had to put medicine on her shell.

I've had a few snappers in my short life and I have been bitten once by a small one but it didn't hurt as much as it shocked me. My one male who is now three is more docile than my other turtles. I don't completely trust him in his enclosure as that's his domain. Once outside though, he doesn't even hiss at me. Always be careful though.

I got bit a while ago catching snappers in the mud thought I had the tail end and had the head.. lol he was small about 6 inches or so, but I got a scar from him. hurts like a paper cut. I'm careful now and make sure I see a tail before I grab on to it or a head. I do not pick them up by the tail. just the back of the shell.

I got nailed by my alligator snapper the other day. It's pretty small, but the puncture got infected for a day or two.
