New Owner!

dsheldon Feb 08, 2005 03:36 PM

I am looking to buy an iguana and have always wanted one. I think it is time for me to get one/. I just have a few questions to ask you guys....1) When it gets very large will it still like to be "played" with? 2) is it more commong for an adult iguana to mind its own business and not like to interact with the owner or is it more common to find adult iguanas who like to sit on the owners lap and such if cared for properly? 3)I have alot of time i can dedicate to the iguana and if i do give it loads of attention will it take a long time to tame it and how hard has your taming experiences been? If you guys could please answer all these questions that would be great thanks. My final question is basiclly I have a ton of time to give to this pet and wnat to know if most iguanas if given a ton of attention constantly turn out to be nice tempered?

i actually find almost all adult igauans, unless unproperly cared for, to love their master like a cat. But they are also experienced owners that have had the ig for a good amount of time. If you have alot of time on your hands then i'm sure the ig will love you before it reaches adulthood.

What do you guys usually feed your iguana? I have read many sample diets some have stuff ive never heard of and some have simple things such as green beans. What do you guys use?

Ike gets collard greens as his main food, and usually gets another leafy green as well, he likes endive, chicory and dill. We keep a selection of fruits and veggies on hand and usually give him 2 or 3 of the following as well with any given meal: kiwi, green beans, melon, mango, strawberry. Every ig is different, though, and have their own tastes. I've heard that most igs love papaya, ours can't stand it. Just make sure you're aware of what foods they shouldn't have, such as kale. Some things that are fine for us are very bad for them, others, like lettuce are nutritionless.
Good luck.

My full-grown male loves to be held, but that's only because he has been very well socialized. I got him when I was 10 (I'm now 25), and since I couldn't have a dog, my ig sort of became my pet dog. And he's always been treated like one, a very spoiled one. He was almost always with me, even on trips, so that's just his way of life, being close to me all the time. He wasn't always like that though, until he was about 3yrs, he was a scratching monster, who would rather run around like a madman than be held. It took a lot of time and patience on my part to get him to where he is today. (I've heard females are a little calmer, but I wouldn't know for sure.) Now, he's just another member of my family, and he's free to go whereever he wants in the house, but mostly hangs out on his chair where his lights are setup.

As for food, I feed my iguana a variety of foods like eskerole, grapes, green beans, apples, carrots, mango, kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, uncooked lima beans and all sorts of stuff. He also gets a very rare treat of cooked chicken or turkey on holidays. I would stay away from broccoli and lettuce, not to mention any food that is supposedly made for iguanas.

Well, i have a page with a list of all good food for igs, i got it from someone on here. it's what i base my ig diet on.

http://www.greenigsociety.org/foodchart.htm

Right now i'm feeding him a mostly mustard greens diet, but i put a little something in there mixxed with it. He's one of the pickiest igs i've ever come in contact with so I have to try out new things.
