HELP!!! FEW QUESTIONS and 2 brand new baby turtles not eating!

sallieu Feb 08, 2005 07:33 PM

Ok, I have a few questions, I just bought two baby sliders (about the size of a quarter) and one slider is way more active than the other (the smaller one is the inactive one) and they both aren't eating at all. I've had them since Friday and they have not eattttttten whatsoever!!!!! I am so worried! I'm feeding them those reptomin things but they aren't even interested in them, I also put in a few pieces of lettuce...but they ignore it...
Next item on the list, does the basking light have to be on 24 hours a day and if not for how long should it be on....
HELP HELP HELP!!!

The basking light should be on basically whenever the sun is up, about 12 hours a day.

It is normal for new turtles not to eat right away. Are you putting the food in the water? Turtles can't eat on land. Also try blood worms or small crickets, they get turtles excited. Inactivity is not a good sign, hatchling turtles have a pretty high fatality rate when they are small.

Hey, first thing you want to do is take the chlorine out of the water, using the like's of NovaAqua or a Stress Coat will remove all the harmful elements in tap water, if you use distilled water than don't worry about what I mentioned above. Then you want to make sure that the water Temp is not to cold 74 - 78 degrees sound about right. Now for the food part of it, Reptomin is something you want to feed every once in a while, try feeding small crickets; quarter of an inch or smaller. Throw some smaller feeder guppies usually .10 to .15 cants a piece in the water they should have no prob munching on those. The thing is you want to give your turtle a variety of food not just one thing over and over. Let me know if this helped you any.
