QUESTION--iguana face

girlything10 Feb 08, 2005 09:30 PM

On the iguanas head there are the ears.. silver circle things.. then they have kinda underneath their ears these slightly larger circles.. i guess they are called " subtympanic shields. " I wanted to know if all iguanas subtympanic shields get like puffed out like they have big tennis balls stuffed in their jaws..because some i saw were flat.. i know it is a weird question. but im curious. do they all get big like that on those green circles??

The males subtympanic scales get larger as they mature. Females stay relatively flat.
Here is my girl last year-

Cheeks puffed out like a typical male.

It's normal for those to get large on adult males... The picture below is of my iguana several years ago. Now, when he lays down, his jowls double the width of his head!
