Silent froggies

Hey all,

Is there anyway to stimulate White's Tree Frogs to call. I have had 2 for almost a year and have only heard them call maybe once or twice. I think on is a male and the other is a female ( only guessing by size, they were both approximately the same size when I got them but now on is about 4 incehs and the other only about 3.) Any suggestions? I really enjoy them but I would love to hear them. Thanks in advance for the input.

Bryan

My two males can be stimulated to call if they hear what sounds like another male calling. You can try playing the .wav file of a male croaking loudly, found at:
allaboutfrogs.org/info/species/whites.html
(look towards the bottom of the page)
Hearing that could stimulate them, or I myself can sometimes get them to start croaking just by imitating what they sound like. Playing music loudly that has a steady bass beat sometimes works, and then sometimes they'll just start croaking at 3am for no reason, hehe.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for responding so quickley. I tried that once and it didn't seem to affect them at all. They are both really healthy, actually one is bordering on being quite a fat frog. I will try it again and see if it works this time. Thanks again,

Are you sure one or more of them is male? Have they ever carried on a sustained cadence of croaks? I have a female, and she will squawk once or twice if my male steps on her or something agitates her.

Also, in case you're trying to make boys out of girls , you could try identifying their gender by looking to see if they have nuptial pads or not. I posted a message on that in the main Tree Frog forum entitled something like 'if you ever wanted to see a WTFs nuptial pads.' In one of the replies I posted a picture of a female and a male, comparing the nuptial pad on the male to the lack of one on the female.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your help. I must be trying to make a boy out of a girl. I just figured that was the reason for the size discrepancy... but come to think of it- Squaw (the larger one) has always been more voracious of an eater. I always understood that nuptial pads were only present during breeding season. I must have been mistaken. There is somewhat of a growth on the smaller ones foot, but no tubercle like growth. Thanks again

That's actually not so hard:

Lower the temps a bit, simulate lots of rain by installing a pump with spraying nozzle and preferrably do this due a time of low pressure...

Good luck,
Kai

Hi Bryan,

I can tell you an easy way to determine if your Whites are male or female. Simply hold your frog with your thumb underneath and your fingers on top (like a sandwich!). Then gently turn the frog onto it's back and apply GENTLE pressure with your thumb near it's throat. The males will automatically start "chirping". To stimulate them to call more when they're caged just add another male! They call more when there's a little competition.

Have fun! KP Oregon

Thanks everyone for their input and advice. Teese forums are such a great resource. I am pretty sure I just have two females... even if one is named Loki. Thats all right. they are great and I love them. Thanks again everyone. Have a great day!
