Reasonable compromise on diet?

wombat Feb 09, 2005 11:54 AM

All the discussion on diet is interesting to a new nasicus owner (got 2: Tycho and Isabella)-

Is there a middle ground that all would agree is a reasonable mixture of food items, and would that list be different for a Western than an Eastern?

I mean, would anyone agree that 50-75% rodents 25% anurans up to 25% other lizards/snakes/inverts would be no problem, or else how should those ratios be adjusted to a mix that most keepers would agree with?

Statement that they need more frequent feeding is helpful- I have wondered since they are wider what the larger size prey they can handle, meant for frequency...

thx-

Westerns can be kept on a rodent only diet, I do not think that there is much controversy to this.

IF you choose to feed amphibians you will need to freeze them for at least two weeks to reduce the risk of parasites.
With lizards you are also increasing the chance that the snakes may aquire cryptosporidia so I normally do not recommend the feeding of reptiles to reptiles unless the snake will not feed otherwise.
