First Beardie Born Today!

anson Feb 09, 2005 06:42 PM

I just hatched my first beardie today.
He is still getting out of the egg. My question is what is the best way to set him up? I have tons of cages, plastic bins, tanks ect. because I breed chameleons and leopard geckos and cresteds. I have lots of stuff not in use because this was a very late breeding last year. I thought the pair was not going to breed for me and she was gravid and laid her eggs late in the season. Due to my inexperience with the eggs I lost all but two. I think I incubated them too wet or most were not fertile because all but two collapsed right away.
Should I use a 10 gallon with a screen top and light it from above with a bulb or go for an undertank with a thermostat?
I only have two babies to go for this first time around so it should be easier than having to seperate out 20 or so.
What basking temp do you keep newborns at? What size cricket is best for newborns and do they eat right away or after a day or two like cresteds and leopards?

A ten gallon is fine. Overhead lighting and an undertank heater w/thermostat are both acceptable. I know some large scale breeders who raise all of their babies on flexwatt. Paper towels are the best substrate for hatchlings. Keep them misted and hydrated. Some will feed on the first day, others will feed on day 3 or 4. Feed them dusted pinhead or 1/8"-1/4" crickets. Remove all crickets at night.
