Introducing a new, slightly older gecko to the cage....

HopeMarie Feb 09, 2005 06:58 PM

I have had my leopard gecko for about a week now and it is about 2 or 3 months old i was told. I'm not sure if it is male or female, and I was wanting to get another gecko also. An albino one. So to ensure i get a female I plan on ordering one through a top breeder store online where i can choose a female. However when i called and asked about the ages, I was told the youngest ones were about 6 - 8 months. I was wondering if introducing another gecko that is a bit older would be a bad idea or not. I'm not sure if at those 2 ages they are still around the same size? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Well you'll have to quarantine them for 3 whole months, that is the minimum. But anyways a 6-8 month old is wayyyyy bigger than a 2-3 month old. I'd wait until they are both a year old (they will be done growing) to introduce them and supervise them thouroghly to make sure one isn't bullying the other.

why will I have to quarantine them? what if i was able to find one that was the same age as the one i have now. would i still need to?
I've only had my gecko for a week at most so he's still getting used to the cage and doesn't come out much.

i had a problem introducing my leo's to each other when i first got my male leo he was 2-3 months 22g so i put him in with a larger female about 50-60g she thought he was a big kricket or somthing. and would not leave him be, she put a pop not on his head. the weird thing is he would always advance her even when she made it clear she was going to kick his tail. so i seperated them, hopefully they can kiss and make up when he is about a year old. that is if halo can forgive dixie 4 the popnot.

Well you need to quarantine them because when you get a gecko you don't know if it has parasites or not because you haven't had time to examine him. So you should ALWAYS quarantine a gecko for 90 days, even if in your mind you are 100% sure if has no parasites or diseases that it can spread to the other geckos. Also a fecal check by the vets doesn't hurt either.

I would not recommend getting another leo yet anyway if you have only had your little guy for a week. Give yourselves both some time to bond witheach other before throwing someone else in the mix. Any when you're ready, there is no shortage of leos.
