Just having a horrible week.

toshamc Feb 10, 2005 11:09 AM

I'm having a horrible week as far as animals are concerned. On Tuesday our 16 year old Siberian Husky passed away in her sleep (absolutely heartbreaking ) and now this morning I went to do my rounds and check all the snakes and one's missing. My sons favorite snake Harry somehow managed to squeeze his way through a 1/4 inch gap at the top of his cage (I put the top on crooked yesterday) and is now MIA. I've tossed the house twice and still can't find him. Anyone know how to find a missing snake? I've checked all the warm spots, the dark spots his typical spots with no luck. The good news I guess is that he hasn't eaten in a week, so he should be out "hunting" this evening. I just hope we find him before the cats do. My week is just sucking.

condolensces on your dog...I recently had to put down one of mine who had cancer and was given a month to live. Almost a month to the day, I had to have her put down. Good luck on finding the snake, I would put a live mouse in an escape proof container that the snake can get to easily, and wait. If you dont catch the snake in the act, and the mouse is gone, at least you know it is still around.

Most of the time I say, don't bother looking, usually you just happen to come across it when you least expect it. If you have an idea of the room that the snake is in you can sprinkle flour on the floor and give it a couple days and if the snake is in there moving around you can follow the tracks! Anyway, good luck finding it, most of the time people find there snakes when they are not actually looking for them at that time.

Sorry to hear about your loss, both of them. I would close all your doors, and keep them shut. That way what ever room he is in, he will stay. Now you can concentrate your search to one room at a time. Look for him at night, he may be out and about. The food idea might work too, you can put a food item in each room. Remember - He escaped through a very small opening, so check in all the nooks and cranings.
I hope you find him soon!

I had one escape artist, and every time he never left the room, he was always under a dresser or desk that was almost impossible to move. Most likely he'll be on the ground and in the same room, so cover every inch of floor space and you'll probably find him...in the meantime keep your cats in a separate room.

Good luck

Did you look near the rack. Cages?
Different racks.
Go in at night too!

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. Our dog is just 7 and I would hate to lose him.
As far as the escapee goes; I'm by no means an expert, but I heard you can make a scent trail along the floor with a prey item (just drag it over the floor) and lead it to a box with a heat mat under it. The idea is that the snake will follow the scent trail to the box where you leave the prey item (f/t rat or mouse), eat the f/t rat or mouse and then stay in the box with the heat pad under it where you will then find him hopefully...

Tosha, sorry bout Kita. It's never good to lose a friend. Now, as to Harry, I think you've got enough advice from everybody else. I'm wonderin' if it's contagious though. I went down to check my critters about an hour ago and found my female ball gone. Is there a full moon or what? Fortunately there weren't to many places for her to hide. She's been found and put back with her boyfriend. good luck findin' Harry.

Have you found Harry yet?

Nope - No Harry yet, we've tried everything mentioned (thanks everyone for all the hints) but still no snake. I figure he'll come out when he's ready. Probably scare the sh*t out of me while I'm watchin TV late one night or something.

Don't forget to check your laundry baskets before yah dump the clothes in the washer,etc...

...and David is right...they love closets for some reason.

I had a hatchling get loose last summer.
I bet i checked the same places 50x before she showed up under the aquarium stand in the living room.
good luck
