First Mali Uromastyx !

aligoonbaba Jul 07, 2003 12:08 AM

Hey I just got my first Uromastyx, he's a male and his name is Rocco. I had a Bearded Dragon and there diet was primarily crickets but it seems like these guys are more veggie based and crickets are occasional, is this correct to say? Rocco isn't a baby, I'm not entirley sure of his age but i was wondering what the best kind of substrate is for these guys. I have a fairly large tank (55gal) and want to put sand. The calci sand is expensive and im on a small budget so I'm looking for something cheaper, yet very good. I know these guys are territorial, but how do they mix with a Bearded or Water Dragon in the same tank? im guessing not well, but i thought i'd ask. thanks for the help guys =)

First off do NOT house him with any other species.Bad idea all around, too many possibilities of cross contamination and all sorts of possible health problems. Not to mention most likely not getting along, getting majorly stressed etc.

As for sand, washed playsand can be found at almost any local hardware store for very cheap.Probably around $3 or so for 50lbs.I'd keep the diet almost exclusively vegetarian with maybe the odd treat of a gutloaded cricket or mealworm.

i agree with the last mentioned repsonse, never mix uro's with other lizards, cause other lizards carry other illness, like beardeds carry coccodia, and can give it to your uro, so never mix uro's with othere lizards, and you can get washed playsand for like $ 3- $ 4 dollars at a home depot or lowes, dont use calci sand, not a good idea. hope this helps good luck you chose a great pet lizard.

Might want to put alot of sand in there especially since they are burrowing animals. I got one of those heat rocks that look like a little hut for mine and he seems to love it.

Hi,
I agree with the other people who answered. Don not combine Uromastyx with other species.

I can understand your question about mixing it with a bearded dragon (both need a dry terrarium), but when you ask if you can combine uro´s with a waterdragon my understanding is gone completely.
Asking such a question makes me wonder if you have informed yourself about them before you bought an uro.
Think about it

Yes, I have informed myself with a uro. I just had a master plan to build this masterpiece of a tank...thats all. I enjoy projects like that.

You can still create a masterpiece without adding different lizards to your tank. I had a lot of fun decorating my uro's tank and he's loving it.
Here's a pic of Ra's tank.
