UVB UVA Lighting

dsheldon Feb 10, 2005 12:37 PM

I was looking for UVB bulbs because i am getting my first iguana and I was wondering if the combination lights work just as well as individual ones... for example the "PowerSun UV(TM) 100W Bulb from ZooMed"

Zoomed carries two really good combination lights, the iguana light, and they have the repti-sun one. They both work great for UVA/UVB, but not really so great for heating. I have the iguana-bulb, and then a separate cermic basking light by ESU.

Can I supplement the UVB light by giving him vitamin d3 with his food?

For reasons we don't fully understand, iguanas can't utilise exogenous vit. D. All their useful vit D is formulated in their skin using chemical reactions triggered by the energy in the UVB wavelengths. Iguana experts caution us to avoid giving any supplemental vit D such as that which is so often found in combination with calcium supplements.

I personally use the PowersunUV I like these because in large Iguana enclosures the normal tube lights only give off UVB/UVA to about a foot of the cage (from the light) but the PowersunUV and other all-in-one bulbs give off UVA/UVB to around 6-7 feet from the light allowing the Iguana to recieve UV rays throughout the cage. But for smaller Iguana babies in 20 gal. enclosures I would reccomend the tube bulb.
