african snappers?

nevrmore Feb 10, 2005 02:38 PM

a nearby pet store has for sale what they're calling "african snapping turtles".
their shells (both carapace and plastron) look just about identical to a common snapper (though i didn't have one handy to do a side-by-side comparison). however, their necks, when outstreched seemed a bit longer. i don't believe that a cross between a snapper and a snakeneck is possible. but i've always thought that snappers were exclusively new-world turtles.
owning a pet store myself, i am well aware that most of my local competitors are ignorant of reptiles in general. i'm guessing that they're calling them "african" so they're not accused of just snatching them from a pond out back. but i could be wrong. has anyone here ever heard of an african snapper?

I was in a pet store this afternoon, talking to an employee who keeps turtles. In the course of the conversation he said he had a turtle that was supposed to be an African snapping turtle. He said he had never heard of such a thing either and tried to research it, but found nothing!

He said it had a hinged plastron, like a box turtle, but it definitly was aquatic.

Guess that doesn't help you much, but someone out there seems to think there is such a thing as an African snapper!

I'm no expert but I believe snappers are only native to the us and mexico, hopefully some one can tell if I'm wrong

well common names mean no thing in reptiles. only scientific names count any more. i have seen pond turtles listed as snappers and different things like that. u can call any thing u want but its the scientific name that counts there are a million names for one animal.
