Have not seen my crested eat once! Should i be worried?

sunshineherps13 Feb 10, 2005 06:38 PM

I have not seen my crestie eat once since i got him. I have peach baby food in the cage with Vitamen spray on it. I put the baby food shaped in a round circle in the cage at night. I hear him jumping around and making all kinds of racket at night! When i wake up there is spot tookin out of the babyfood. Like he licked it up in one spot. I dunno, could someone give me some information?

If the gecko is very young, the amount they eat is also very small. Th fact that you've never seen it, but can tell it has licked some up, is very normal.

Nothing too worry about, unless they're are losing weight.

He is pretty small, which makes me wonder if i should have him in my 5.5 gallon. He is about 3-4 months old and i'm keeping him in a 20 gal long aquarium. How do i know if he is losing weight? I'm kind of worried about him...I need some more info.

I personally believe a 20 long is to large for a babey or juvenaile Crested Gecko. i keep my 2.5ish month old in a med kritter keeper (approx dimensions 8"x6"x8" with some branches. its small enough that it can easily find Crested Gecko Diet or gutloaded crickets. but large enough it can climb around on the silk plants at night.

The large cage makes this harder on the gecko, finding crickets in particular.

the gecko diet is excelent for feeding these lizards i recomend you get some instead of baby food.

gl with your gecko

I keep my 3-4 month olds in large critter keepers and 10 gallons.
You can tell if they are losing weight by weighing them and then a day or two later weigh them again. Each weigh in usually changes about a gram or so due to how much they ate the night before or if you weighed him before he used the bathroom. I usually don't see mine eat due to they eat when I'm usually asleep but when I wake up almost all of it is gone. You said you see a spot where it looked like he started licking it this is probably due to him eating and you just not noticing. Overall, as long as he/she has a round healthy apperance he is probably ok. If you are so worried that you are losing sleep about it take him to a herp vet. Hope this helped

put a bit of babyfood ( or preferably crested gecko diet) on your finger and see if it eats it. or try feeding it with a syringe and let it lick it off of that. this would be a good way to go until you get a smaller enclosure for it.
