Which Mantella?

avengedphish Feb 10, 2005 11:22 PM

Hi I am going to get 50 or 6 Mantellas. I am wondering which mantella is the most active. I want a mantella that will hop around and not hide all the time. LIghting and heating will not be a problem, but I am a first time frog owner. I like the black eared, bacause they are so small, but I hear that they are not very social. Also is it a problem keeping more than one mantella male together?

some of the species are very territorial. This species also does not tolerate temps above 75 F for long periods of time and sudden spikes into the low 80s can be rapidly fatal.

Check out the frognet archives. (frognet.org).

Out of the species I have cared for (aurantiaca, viridis, laevigata, expectata, madagascariensis and crocea) male aurantiaca, expectata and crocea are very bold, females seem to be a little on the shy-side. M. viridis and madagascariensis are cautious about coming out in the open while your around and often choose to remain hidden unless there is food around.

I have had few problems keeping male mantella frogs together even though they are very territorial. Male aurantiaca will wrestle over territory. I have heard of situations where small, weak, or unhealthy males were bullied out of food by stronger ones so it's important to keep an eye on any small frogs. I would also recomend keeping wild-caught mantellas in seperate enclosures for at least a few weeks prior to housing them together so that weak or unhealthy frogs have time to put on some weight and be medicated if needed. Good luck,

Yeah. My betsileo male used to be out in the open a lot and call. My female would tend to pick a spot in a covered area and patrol it. I really believe the "shyness" has to do with the fact mantellas lay their eggs in burrows.

Unfortunatley, all my betsileo are pretty shy at the moment. I need to move them into a decent home. I have never witnessed any of my three betsis fighting over anything, but I believe i have two females and a male right now in a 10 gallon.
