Photos of Central PA herps (longish)

jsc230 Feb 11, 2005 12:05 AM

I just put up a site that will be dedicated to the herps of central pa.

http://jconklin.freestarthost.com/

It is just now started and FAR FAR from finished.

Anyways, I only have a few pics from the end of last summer up right now. I am learning to photograph better those were taken with pas camera, the Kodak DX 4350. I am barrowing myfathers 35mm SLR camera it is a really good camera sohopefully this summer I will get better pictures up.

Some info, all pics were taken in Centre County, if you livein PA and have some suggestions please email me.

-I hopeto geta map up to show locations where each particular herps was found, sothat other peoplecan go find them fairly easily.

-oncei geta lot of pictures i plan to order them in a better fashion

-the site may be open to user contributions later on, oncei geta paid site

Hopefully this turns into somethingthat will benifit the community. Especially all the herpers in Central PA.

I would be carfull of putting maps to exact locations, some not all people might over collect species, then all your work would be lost and you might have a hard time finding species. just thought I might save you trouble, put a county map or something instead.

I had never thought of that, but you make a very good point. With that in mind the map won't be up. I like to be able to go out and find herps photograph them, then let them be on their way. But, some people as you mentioned like to keep them (or lots of them).

Thanks for that bit of information I appreciate it greatly.

I agree with Wayne I wouldn't put up any specific locations were you find your reptiles. there are many good people out there but for every good person there are a couple who will completely deplete and area of reptiles. I am familar with central pa and enjoy that area very much would hate to see its reptiles depleted. thanks

guard your spots with your life.. I knew of 2 spots to find spotted turtles and one has been destroyed. the other is on my property so I don't have to worry, though I only see 3-5 a year it's better than none. I'd shoot someone if they were out there stealing my critters..lol not really but there would be some legal actions taken.

Did you know Lancaster County just started a herpetology society? We might be of some help with your project.

I also do a reptile rescue in Central PA, although I don't get much of a chance to work with native stuff, mostly herps brought into the pet trade that would have been better off never brought in (iguanas, burms, etc)

Please get in touch with me if you want more info on the Lancster Herp Society, I'm sure some of us will be able to help. We're planning to do some herping trips in the Spring when it warms up.
