experiences with zoo med under tank heaters?

ndolson Feb 11, 2005 12:17 AM

I just bought a 6 x 8" zoo med UTH from petco to use on my 20 gallon long bp aquarium, because I didnt feel my heat lamp was cutting it. I am mainly wondering about the quality of them etc. Safe to leave on all day while at work, no fires, you know...just little stuff like that. I dont know why I am so paranoid about electrical stuff being on while I am at work...Maybe its a slight obsessive compulsive quirk I have :P

It is elevated 3 inches off the stand I have it on using some wood, and is stuck to the bottom of the aquarium.

Thanks
Neal

why do you not like zoomed? i am thinking bout getting another tank set up. i cuurently use a zoomed but i had to get a rheostat cause itgot way to hot. i havent ssen any others in pet stores around me but the ext-terra brand. is that as good as the cobra?

I like some of the zoomed products.. they make good UV products.. The UTH's have failed on me and I have read countless postes of them developing hotspots.. I woudl go with the Exo's for sure, they are made by the same company that manufactures flexwatt.. Hope this helps,

Thanks for your input. What I am concerned about is their safety mostly. I will be building a custom enclosure within the next 2 months, and will be going with flexwatt at that point...I just wanted to make sure this will "do" until I change up my habitat a little bit.

Can not use them without it! I had a few zoomed UTHs at one point, and they got so hot that you couldn't hold your hand on the glass above them. Get either a reptile thermostat or rheostat, or even a plug in dimmer switch to reduce the heat (plug in dimmer is about 10 bucks at the local home improvement joint). Good luck!

We used zoomed mats for over 4 years without any problems. We still use them in our incubators and are very confident in them. The only reason we no longer use them in our racks is due to the fact that flexwatt is alot more practical.
At one time, we had over 40 zoomed mats hooked up in our rack system.
