Adult ball python cage size

TaylorW Feb 11, 2005 07:08 AM

Hello,
I'm going to build my own or have a cage built for my male ball python, which I just measured and is 34" long and a two and a half years old. I want to build something that can keep him for the rest of his life. I have heard suggestions as to size all over the map, from something as long as the snake (I figure at least five feet) to just something 30"X12"X6"high. What do you all recommend?
And if you know of any good sites with ideas on cool cages I'd appreciate them!

thanks in advance,
Taylor

Taylor, a 30 X 12 X 6 cage would probably be sufficient. They aren't normally very active so don't need alot of room, but larger might be better just to allow then to stretch if they feel like it. As long as the snake has a hide box or two and you can control the heat efficiently size of the cage is not a major concern. Also, I think if you are going to leave it in the living room, as a display, bigger has more advantage as to decoration. If it's simply ment to house a snake then smaller might be better. Different options for different situations, it's really up to you.

Rule of thumb: He should be able to stretch out at least once around the cage without overlaping or from corner to corner.

How tall you want it is up to you, but they spend most of their time in their hide so a tall cage is not all that important, occasionally they'll like to climb up on a branch or something so you might want a little bit of height.

Hope this helps!
