How Big is Too Big???

spangles Feb 11, 2005 08:42 AM

I'd like to breed my corns, but my male is bigger then my female. I know it's important for them to be close to the same size, or for the male to be smaller, but how close do they really have to be? My female bred last year to a smaller male that we no longer have.

Thanks!

The first pair of corns that bred for me were a male a bit over 4 feet long and a female right on 3 feet. There seemed to be no problems for either snake. I don't recall the exact number of eggs or hatchlings, which probably means that it was in the expected range of 90-100% fertility/hatch. Hope that helps.

All my males are huge compared to the females.Ive never even heard of anyone saying they both have to be the same size.Ive seen 3-4 feet male boas breed 40 to 60 pound females.Same goes for burmese, retics, etc. As long as there sexually mature and healthy everything should be fine...Paul

So long as the female is big enough to safely be gravid in the first place, the ratio of size (male/female or female/male) is fairly irrelevant. The only exception to this is if one snake is SO much bigger than the other, that the smaller of the two is distressed about having a potential cannibalistic encounter.

I have seen small males get all kinds of freaked out by a mature female to the point of being uninterested in breeding. However, I've not had a female react that way, because once they're big enough to breed, they usually don't get intimidated by a larger male. Usually...
