Panacur for coccidia?

bmulcahy Feb 11, 2005 09:10 AM

My vet gave my 280 gram female panacur for coccidia. He said that they have found that albon isn't that effective and panacur is a better option. He also had me give it to my three other dragons in my class. Any thoughts? Am I putting my dragons in danger? I am on the last day and the only thing I have noticed is less of an appetite with all my dragons.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Brian

The active ingredient in Panacure is Fenbendazole this is often prescribed to owners for “take home” dosing. The chance of overdosing is very slim and the side effects are minimal.
The preferred choice for coccidia treatment is the sulphur drugs; Sulfadimethoxine AKA Albon and is the most successful and most widely prescribed.

Canadianherper pretty mcuh covered it

Panacur will not do a thing in treating coccidea. I can't see it hurting the beardie, but tehre's no point in using it seeing as it wont help at all. Albon is the way to go.

But there are a few other factor to keep in mind with coccidea. You must keep the cage spotless! Use bare essentials and disposable furnitures and substrate. I used a couple layers of paper towel to be taken out 2-3 times daily, as well as a carboard basking spt I could pitch each night.

Baths to keep him clean and hydrated, as well as lots of fluids for hydration. Provide water to the mouth via syringe or spray bottle 2-3x daily. Wehn in the tub you may want to use put some paper towel around your finger and "wipe" the beardie around the vent in order to clean him up a bit. Make sure you wash your hands in between every time you set him down some place then pick him back up again.

Feed him outside the cage, and once introduced to an insect or piece of salad, if not eaten, consider it infected and throw it out.

With Albon you must use a probiotic like Acidophiliz . The Albon will flush out all the good bacteria in the gut, and the probiotc is needed to replace it. Use the probiotic an hour or so after using the albon, and continue using it even a wekk after finishing the albon.

thats fine, it works great, i use it on all my reps when I purchase any and on all my hatchlings when they are old enough, more than likely found parasites in stool and as a precaution gave all other reps that too, cuz they might have parasites also.
