i am really frusterated with my home made incubator!!!! i have a hova bator question

trevorbennett Jul 07, 2003 02:31 AM

i just got my last clutch of fertile eggs out of one of my older girls (clutch #7 this year) and it was her last one ever, she is retiring now. i was using the incubator on a budget and my rehostat just stopped working and the temperature sky rocketed to 107F!!! killing 17 fertile eggs!! this was my first year breeding and the only eggs i've gotten, the rest were infertile. if i went out and bought a hova bator would i need to buy a separate rehostat? or does a hova come with one??? thanx for everyones help!!!!!

The incubator should have an internal regulator but it's like an aquarium heater, where it only heats up when the temperature drops too low. You'd still have to make sure it was in a place where it wouldn't get too hot.

I had a lot of trouble with a homemade one also. My hoveabator works great and the only thing it didnt come with is a digi therometer with inside/outside sensors. The unit sits inside the incubator and the outside probe goes in the egg container.

I am using a little giant still air incubator which go for about 40 bucks at the local feed store (they are sold for hatching chicken eggs). It has a built in temp control device and you can regulate it with a little nob. I have been really pleased with mine (which is an old version too!)...it fluctuates slightly by a couple degrees or two, but has not gone over 90 or below 80 yet.
