1 month old babies with newborns ??

funkymonkey Feb 11, 2005 10:19 AM

Hi All,

Well you will be please to know that Elmo and his bro's and sis's are all doing great.

problem now is that i have another batch of which i am expecting maybe 4 or 5 tops to hatch out in 3 weeks.

Will these be able to be housed with Elmo and his mates barring in mind they will be a month apart age wise.

also,, why do eggs fold into themselves any ideas ??
a few have from the latest batch, yet the others in the batch are fine and the embrio can be seen moving.

temp is 83 degree's with plenty of humidity.
any ideas ??

many thanks

Funky

The larger ones will eat the small ones...maybe not all the time, but I personally know of two situations where that has happened. Whethere it was a ruch on a cricket that led to the attack, or just the movement in general, it's not a good idea to house them together. One bit on the head, and you'll have a whacked up baby. Sometime even with lizards of the same clutch, you'll have some that will outgrow the others at an extraordinary rate and will need to be separated.

About the eggs. There is a chance they were infertile. It is possible for a female to lay some good, and some bad eggs. You can always dry to place a few drips of water around the eggs that are dented...try not to saturate the area.

Best of luck...baby lizard rearing can be quite a chore! LOL

I did not necessarily mean "EAT." Even an attempt is not good, as you will have severely injured limbs and missing tails/kinked tails. I know of one instance where a small lizard was added, and another larger lizard 1-2 months old tried to eat it...The larger lizard actually choked to death on the baby...ahhh sweet revenge.

thanks very much mate,, was thinking that as well, with collared being lizard eaters,, but wasn't sure if a month was a short enough time to get away with it,, But better to be safe than sorry, lol

guess i'll be making anther baby viv this weekend then, lol

Last night, i brough the temp us half a degree or so and dampened the vermiculite a little more with the eggs out of it while i was dampening it.

also covered the air holes a bit to get the humidity up a little more.

while on the subject of eggs, I am starting to get a little concened for Grumpy the female.
She is gravid again and due to drop any time.
This is the 3rd batch in as many months and i dont want her to get ill from it.

Would it be an idea to put her on her own or with her sister so they are away from Dave for a while do you think ??

well, even if she and dave do not do the deed, she can still lay eggs after becoming gravid. sometimes they will reabsorb infertile eggs but ivan did that once last year and i think it messed with her. like one day she randomly laid a little deformed egg. anyway that is just my experience.
but you can pump your female up on calcium, feed her extra while she is not too pregnant and feed her more fatty bugs like waxworms

You could cut her feed down after this next clutch. I think they more they are eating, the more likely they are to keep up the production. IN the wild it is unlikely the clutch more than twice in a season.
