Three-Toed Box Tortoise Question(s)!!

stepha Jul 07, 2003 02:53 AM

About 5 days ago, I decided to take in a Three-Toed Box Tortoise, from a shelter a friend works at, She had been Abused by her last owner. I'm not used to a tortoise around the house, I have many water turtles. I have a couple questions. She seems very timid around me and everyone else in the house. Could this be because of her last owner (meaning she'll be like this all the time)? Or would it be because it's a new home and she's not too sure yet? Although she has losened up a little bit when I'm changing her food and water through out the day, or when I take her outside to run around, but if i walk by her she goes into her shell fast. I'm not too sure on how old she is either. I was also wondering on if there are any kinds of plants i would be able to grow in doors in her home and would be safe in case she was to chomp on one? I am unable to keep her outside all year round because I live in Wisconsin, I also don't have the money right now to build her a house outdoors. But if someone could please help me out a bit with my questions that would be awesome!

It sounds like what you have is a box "turtle".

Some people call them tortoises, but common usage is "box turtle".

Try the box turtle forum for help.

Here is a website that covers care

I have 2 three-toed box turtles (like Peter, below). Sometimes they are shy, sometimes brave. It takes time.

If what you have is a 3toe box turtle, then just give her time to adjust. Some never become more then a display pet. On the other hand you could in end up with a great new friend. Remeber to do your homework on her care! You must be better then her past keeper as you have taken the time to look for help. That is a big step in the right direction.
Good luck and you are welcome here anytime!
You may also email me with any questions. I also have a 3toe.
