any and all info on fly rivers needed

thedrizzle Feb 11, 2005 02:53 PM

For about a year I have been researching Fly River turtles and I think I am going to purchase one in the next few months. Here are some questions I need answered. Is a 300 gal tank big enough for an adult? Can I find a captive bred turtle? Will I get a healthy tutle from the KS classifieds? I have 10 years experience with reptiles. I have kept a red tail boa, yellow anaconda, spiny softshell, various hard shelled turtles, and I currently own an Argentine Tegu, Dwarf Caiman, Frilled Lizard, Chinese Water Dragon, and a Giant Day Gecko, do you think I am capable of caring for this turtle. Please respond with any info you can provide, I want to buy a healthy turtle and have it live for a long time.

300 gallons should hold him for a while.

No such thing as captive bred animals. All are wild caught animals or hatched from harvested eggs. It's a crapshoot as far as KS classifieds go for any animal. Best to see if you can get references from other people that may have dealt with the person selling the animals.

You will most likely do well with it if you have done all your research and know what you are getting into.

If 300 gal isnt big enough, what size should I get? I was going to get an custom acrylic tank.

I said 300 should hold him for some time. (if not permanently)

The emphasis should be on dimensions NOT gallonage. If you provide him with an 7-8 ft long by at least 2 foot (wider is better) wide by 2 -3 foot high environment he could live quite well in that for his entire life.
