YOUR HELP IS NEEDED IN ILLINOIS NOW TOO!

Eric East Feb 11, 2005 04:16 PM

I just learned of this today. IL. is voting on HB0707 next Wednesday.

This bill will require the licensing of anyone, even hobbyist who sells even one animal. It appears to be geared more toward dogs and cats but, will effect herps as well. It even goes so far as to say that the bird feed you buy must be that which is prescribed by an avian veterinarian.

Please help defeat this bill buy contacting the following Representitives.

I'm attaching a link to the full text of the bill below.

Thanks & God bless!

Eric

Hi Eric, I read over the proposed bill and I don't see references to reptiles. This has always fallen under the umbrella of the IDNR who oversees herp related activities (and issue the endangered species permits). If I missed something let me know. This proposed bill, either way, is a bit vague and still leaves much for intepretation. We'll see where this goes. Rob

Hi Rob, I agree it is a bit vague in places but, reptiles are mentioned. Here's a quote from it:

"Animal caretaker Pet shop operator" means any person who
13 sells, offers to sell or , exchange, or offers for adoption with
14 or without charge or donation dogs, cats, birds, fish,
15 reptiles, or other animals customarily obtained as pets in this
16 State. "Animal caretaker" includes, but is not limited to, a
17 pet store, breeder, adoption facility, shelter, or private
18 individual who performs any of the functions of an animal
19 caretaker listed in this paragraph.

maybe it's nothing but, I think we should at least make our concerns known in a respectful mannor.

Absolutely no one in the Illinois legislature cares 2 hoots about the opinion of anyone not in their district.

I think everyone who is interested in exotic pets will be much more effective by reining in the abuses in the exotic pet industry than they will be sending email to legislators in states other than their own.

It amazes me that people trying to protect their privelege (not right) to collect, keep, breed and sell exotic pets seem to focus their energy reactively on bills already introduced.

It would be much more effective to get herp and exotic pet societies together, introduced to the state legislatures and pro-actively curtailing the many abuses in the industry, including unrestricted collecting from the wild, freedom to keep dangerous herps, etc.

The fact of the matter is, that many of the exotic animal keepers that aare introduced to the public are trailer trash drunks who make the papers because they got drunk and bit by their taipan, or left the lid off their burmese python's cage. Railing at legislators and not pro-actively dealing with the losers in this industry is just pissing in the wind.

I'm getting rather tired of it.

Maybe praying would help...
