hi. i am a new eastern collared owner. his name is frankensteen, like frankenstein. anyway, i have 4 peices of slate looking rock stacked in a corner to give him a basking place and a hideaway. i have had him for 5 days now. today i didnt see him in the cage so i started to freak out until i seen the very tip of his head sticking out from under one of the slate rocks forming the foundation for the cave. he dug up under it was sleeping. it looked as if i laid the rock right on top of him when i built it. anyway, i was wondering if i should be worried about this behavior? also, i think its a male but not really sure. whats the best way to make sure? thanks

I would highly suggest you put two bricks beneath the base of the slate. The lizard can bury himself, and create enough of an opening to collapse the slate above him, and pin him underneath. I have had this happen to one lizard this year.

Secondly, if it is an eastern collared, you can check it two different ways...

1st. See if you notice two small brown/black (dark) spots on the sides of the anus...One on each side (pretty much in line with the anus).

2nd. In males there is a row of large scales just posterior to the anus...kind of hard to sex for the first time, unless you have something to compare it to. If I had more time this morning, I'd take some quick pictures for you. I think there are still some nice pics floating around this forum somewhere.

thanks! that would be great. i remember a couple pics showing what you are talking about on the forum but it was a whille ago. i checked and he (or she, right?) does not have black dots. he also has a line of small bump looking things going up the underside of each leg. thanks for the help!!
