Our turtles winter living arrangements

norristhenut Feb 11, 2005 07:35 PM

We have two male Eastern Boxies, they get along great, that we keep in our family room all winter,
We live in northeast Ohio. In nice weather spring through fall they live in our garden about 15 x 25 foot. For a fence I used some geo mat, that’s a plastic type of mess with about 1x1 inch openings that is used in construction to control
Land banks from erosion. I work construction so… bingo. I cut the fence about 30 inches wide and burry about 8 inches underground and that’s where are turtles live with adequate housing and water.
In the winter months they move into our family room and stay in a 45 gallon tank
With bed of beast , heat rocks, heat light and a large UVB light that they think is the sun. The reason I say that is they get up every day or so and have night crawlers, veggies, and or some bananas. After that they soak in individual tubs of water for one or two hours they seem to like as they stretch way out all four legs and neck. I have included some pictures of their living arrangements.
1 picture is of them sleeping under the sunlight. Another picture is closer.
And the last picture is a view of our family room.
This post is really nothing special, since it’s winter and not to much happening
I thought I would share the way we treat our boxies.

Thanks AlanG aka Norristhenut

You set up looks very nice. But im sure the turtles would profer to hibernate outside for the winter. I leave my turtles out all winter and its always nice in the spring to see them for the fist time again.

Im sorry to come off sounding like a prick, but I personally think that setup is garbage.. That's pretty small for 2 adult box turtles, it looks pretty dry in there, and the open top can't hold humidity very well.. Also, they should have a large tub they can soak in, as opposed to that water dish.. I'm not a huge fan of bed a beast either, but that's a personal opinion.. I hope you don't see this as a personal attack or anything... Constructive criticism. Very nice turtles though:D.

Matt, thank you for the constructive criticism, I certainly welcome the thoughts and opinions of others. Although it looks and appears dry in their area the bed of beast is very moist underneath, I pour 1 to 3 gallons of water once a week and mix it up. They soak everyday in 12 quart individual water tubs, after they are offered food. Both turtles lay with their legs and head out, in the water and in their
Living quarters. When the UVB light is on they walk around crawl on rocks.
They appear to be content with these winter arrangements.
If your not a fan of bed of beast what other bedding do you recommend for this arrangement. These are Vary nice turtles!
Garbage, I don’t think so this is a very clean well maintained living area and the turtles are attended to daily.
Again, thank you for opinion.
