Ranco thermostat question

BobS Feb 11, 2005 11:28 PM

One more question.

I have the Boaphile double Ranco thermostat.Do you think it's safe to put it on a timer for nightly turn-off. I know it retains it's reading if there is a power outage But do you think it can be counted on to regularly turn off nightly and consistently retain it's setting without one day turning on and cooking the herps? Thanks again. Sorry for all the questions lately.

Install the timer after the T-stats so you kill power to the rack and not the T-stats. I know with electronic equipment you do not want to turn it off and on like that. I have no idea if it would really hurt it or not but it is best to kill the power after the controler and not before it. Just my 2-cents of advice.

That may or may not work.. If the unit would kick off the poser to the timer and it is an analog timer it will lose time and you will have to adjust it every time the power is turned on or off. The majority of timers will not hanadle alot of wattage so you have to look at that as well... Just some thoughts..

Safest most reliable way to cut it off would be to skip a digital timer altogether. and try these two methods .

#1- on the load side ( after power strip install a simple rotary switch over the cords and do it manually
#2- See above lol

Why do you wish to cut off the thermostat to start with ? esp two in series to one another you will have defeated the money you spent for dual backups by cutting them off at night ?

The reason I wanted to set it up was because I manually turn it down at nite to simulate the normal lowering of night time temps at night and thought it would be nice to have it done automaticly. One less thing to do. thanks again.
