Having trouble w/ feeding, please help

paganlyon Feb 12, 2005 01:06 AM

I just aquired a 6 foot female Guyanan Red Tail and I'm having trouble getting her to feed. I've tried all the tricks I use on my Ball Pythons, Braining, enclosed box. I've even tried feeding live as opposed to fresh killed or frozen. Any suggestions would be helpful. It's only been 2 weeks and shes very hardy, so I might just be over alarmed and shes not acclimated enough.

the acclimation may be it. you might want to just leave her alone for a week or so. it wont kill her to not eat for a few more days. ask the previous owner how he hed her. find out what triggers a boas eating response. my bloods will eat if i tap their tail with a rat. find out what triggers an eating response in boas and take advantage of it. of course, all creatures are picky. ive heard of snakes that refused to eat feeders with dark fur....would only eat white feeders. i have one snake that wont eat a F/T until it eats a live rat. time and patience is what will work best for you. i will tell you thst i have heard that dipping a feeder into chicken broth will trigger an eating response in snakes. havent looked into this so im not sure if the feeder has to be dried out first or still covered in the liquid. i dont worry about my snakes not eating. when they get hungry enough they will eat.
