Quick rack question:

shadowmonkey01 Feb 12, 2005 02:48 AM

Will tubs that are 23" long by 16.75" wide by 6" tall be alright for storage of my corns in a rack system I'm building or are they too small. I'd like to build something that I won't need to replace in the future due to my snakes outgrowing the tubs.

That's the size of a standard 28/32 qt. sweaterbox which is what most of the major breeders keep theirs in.

It's what I kept them in when I first got into snakes and felt it was a bit small. They'll do fine in there but it's your peace of mind that matters here.

Remember than the sides slope so you lose floor area. In the case of the typical 28 qt. sweater box that means a 20"x14" floor area. That's just a bit bigger than a 20"x10" 10 gallon aquarium.

You should ask this over on the cornsnake forum(s) as well.

I have built 2 racks this week! one for yearling balls and one for adults.

here is a pic of the sub adult rack the dim. are:

2-sides 24 inches wide by 67.5 inches tall
1-back 17 inches wide by 67.5 inches tall
11- shelves 24 inches deep by 17 inches wide(pre cut at home depot=1 sheet of mellamine).
10 28qt ster. boxes
1 600 watt dimmer
2 dig therm.
4 casters (wheels)
10 11" pieces of flexwatt

the second rack is for ster. boxes are 34.5 by 16.75 by 6 inches.

2-sides 36 inches wide by 29 inches tall
1-back 17 inches wide by 29 inches tall
5-shelves 36 inches deep by 17 inches wide (again pre cut 1 sheet)
4-ster. boxes
this rack is set up so each box is on a seperate dimmer for my adults to ensure the propper temps!

I hope this helps!

Did you use the 1/8" shower board for the sides of both racks?

What did you use for the back?

I've never thought to try something as thin as 1/8", but I'm glad to know it works!

Chris it is 1/8 inch shower board or bath board...at first it looked like I really screwwed the pooch!!!!!after you put the sides on you have to put the back on and yes it 1/8 inch bath board on the back as well but it is as strong as using all plywood!I was shocked!

Paul,

How do you have the heat tape hooked up on your racks? I would assume you have the cords running out of the back of your rack.

Also, do you have any kind of rail system on the shelves to keep the tubs from rubbing the heat tape?

Thanks,

DR Grimsley

They are run in parallel out the rearend of the rack.

and no no rails just a type of foil tape I have used this before and after 1 year the tape and heat tape were just about as they were the first day!

Paul,
Did you cover the entire foot of heat tape with the foil tape? I have racks almost like yours except I used 1x6's on the four corners for support(outside the showerboard) and I have 1/4" x 2" rails on each shelf.

Thanks,

DR Grimsley
