Iggy not eating much

atcelltech Feb 12, 2005 11:29 AM

Hi,
Frankie -- the iguana -- is not eating much. I recently built him a new cage. So he has ALOT of room and he seems to like the cage a lot. About the same time that I built the cage, I started giving him baths. Because he is not eating, he is not going to the bathroom either..not even in the bath. Today I got a kitty litter box and put it into his/her(??) cage filled with about 2 inches of water and a aquarium tank heater under that. He seems to absolutley LOVE his new swimming pool. He has already gone to the bathroom twice in it and seems to like hanging out in there as well.

He has also REALLY calmed down. Doesn't swat at me his tail, of fight (at least not hard) to get out of my hands. This started when I started giving him baths...about 2 weeks ago (cage is about 1 week I think). He scoots around his cage real well, he walks around the house good, swims in his baths. He SEEMS healthy, just melow and not eating???!!! He takes a couple of bites of the servings that I give him. He use to wolf down 2 of these servings a day and now he just takes a couple of bites of 1 serving.

His normal diet is Collard Green (60%), Mustard greens (30%) and a little fruit and veggies (5% or so).

Any body got any ideas why he isn't eating.

(cage is kept at 92 deg on the right side -top and bottom, 82 degress (currently) in the upper left, and currently 74 in the lower left (this is where his food is). I think that this is a good variety of temps and he seems to visit all areas at different times.)

Thankyou for any suggestions that you might have.

Hi. Perhaps its just stress from the changes of the new cage. I know they dont like change much. You could try to entice him to eat with some fruit. I know when Ozzy was in breeding season and on a hunger strike, he could not resist blueberrys. Wouldnt touch anything else in his bowl, but those. Is he maybe in breeding season? Just tossing out some ideas. Hope he starts eating good soon. But if he is going in the catlitterpan, thats a good sign he is taking in some food at least and getting hydrated well too with soaking in the water. I know how nerve wracking it is when they wont eat. Ozzy about drove me crazy through his breeding season, but thankfully thats over now. Good luck. Tami

Thanks,
i am thinking that is what it is...mating season. he is taking in a little food, and I do actually spray it with some extra water before giving it to him. I did however think that with mating season, came "meanness" when in fact I have the opposite now. He has mellowed WAY out. Still, that may be. I am not sure if it is a male or female, but I think I am leaning towards the female side. My girlfriend thinks I am wrong, but I am sure that he is also loosing weight. I hate that!! I love watching all my animals eat. This all started a little before he got the new cage, so maybe it is all just compounded. I will keep an eye on him.
THANKS
