Brought home my BRB this morning!

nekomi Feb 12, 2005 12:42 PM

Unfortunately, no pics yet - my camera wasn't working when I picked her up at the show, and now that she's in her cage, I don't want to bug her by taking her back out. But she's really beautiful, full circle crescents and gorgeous dorsal markings!

I do have a question regarding feeding. How soon should I try to feed her and expect her to eat?

I have a bag of 50 f/t pinkies here for her, and now that I'm home, I realize I should have gotten something larger - I followed the breeder's instructions on what he was feeding. How many should I offer at a meal? Next month I'll be able to pick up some larger prey items.

Thanks again! Hopefully that will answer all my questions for the time being.

Nekomi congrats on your new BRB purchase and after reading some of your other posts I really do commend you studying up on this BRB before you bought and having the setup complete. It's awesome.
About your feeding, wait 48 hrs for you BRB to get acclimated to it's new environment.
Did the breeder you got the BRB tell you it's last feeding date and to feed f/t pinks?
Regardless, after 48 hours enjoy your new BRB and handle him/her. Then the next night I would feed 4 f/t pinks to your BRB every 7 days. Nekomi, this is just what I would do. I only have 1 BRB. Jeff Clark is 'DA MAN' when it comes to BRB and hopefully he will post. You do need to get larger f/t for your BRB like depending on the size small or large hoppers to feed every week.
Is there a pet store around you where you could call them and see if you could trade the f/t pinks for hoppers?
Anyhow, good luck and congradulations on your new BRB.

Uncloudy,

Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement! The research was certainly a thrill for me, and I enjoyed learning so much about snakes and especially BRB's in the last year I've been haunting the forums. I'm very excited to start gaining firsthand experience and knowledge now that I have my little BRB.

The breeder did not tell me the last feeding date, but I consider that my own fault. I was a bit caught up in the excitement of finally purchasing, and forgot to ask. I tried to remember most of the "important questions", but that one slipped my mind. ^^ Yes, he mentioned that he was feeding f/t pinks, so I stopped at RodentPro's booth and asked to verify that pinkies were appropriate. They agreed, and so I went with that. Of course, I came home and reread Jeff's caresheet and realized my mistake!

Thanks so much for the clear feeding advice. I have 50 pinkies, so feeding four at a time won't be a problem. I'll get more appropriate prey next month at the show.

Thanks again for the congrats! I'm enjoying my BRB very much already and can't seem to tear myself away from watching the cage.

How old is she? She should at least be eating hoppers, but she
may be able to eat sm adult mice if she's 5 to 6 months old. I would wait 4 to 5 days before feeding and expect her to eat the first meal. If you go with the pinkies she likely will need 4 to 6 of them.

Hi Sunshine,

If I remember correctly, she is 6 months old, so I guess small mice will soon be on her menu. I'm going to call the breeder tomorrow to verify her age. Thanks for the advice!
