Much help needed about "leaf frog" !

nickmedina1989 Feb 12, 2005 03:07 PM

I passed by my local reptile shop and found this frog.

http://www.geocities.com/nickmed1989/index.html

the shop owner told me that a bowl of water and some decorative plants along with a damp moss substrate was all that was needed, Along with crickets.

Well, its the fourth day, and i have yet to see the frog eat any crickets. It also seems rather inactive. It croaks from time to time, mostly at night with the lights off. The shop owner also said that a thin layer of calcium or sand was ok just under the moss. I am starting to believe that they didn't know too much about this animal, which is why i am posting here. If somebody can, i would like to know EVERYTHING about this frog, from the way it eats, the environment, its temperament, etc. I am really worried and would like any help as soon as possible, thanks.

Hopefully these will help out:

I don't have personal experience with Megophrys species so maybe someone else can chime in and add a little bit. Good luck,

Thanks, your links were helpful.

in this website it says that.... "Megophyrys nasuta can intake very large food items. Some common food items are crickets, roaches, mealworms (cut off heads), wax worms, pinkies, etc. These frogs eat a lot of food, so be fare warned."

i passed by my pet shop yesterday and the employee i talked to was the one who actually fed this guy. She said they can be nocturnal and that a black light may be a good idea. I left one running last night and i still see a cricket. She also said that they eat every other day...can somebody with some type of experience tell me if this information is accurate?

I do admit I have no experience with this specific frog but it sounds like your pet shop people aren't a good source of information. Keep up with the searches, and look in libraries for books on them or related species.

In general a healthy frog will eat just about anything that it considers food. The "twice a day" rule was likely regurgitated instructions from the store owner. This may not be poor advice when avoiding an obese frog, but not in consideration of your frog's current inappetance.

This frog is most likely wild caught, thus parasitism is a concern. Consider a vet appointment.
