Southern tip of Texas today, February 12th...

RioBravoReptiles Feb 12, 2005 03:55 PM

I picked up a buddy of many years to do some near-the-house herping.. temps are in the upper 70's with some sun and a stiff breeze. Little or no precipitation here since snow-day (12/25/04)...

My buddy is a little out of practice.. he took about 10 steps from the car into the grass and stood looking around kind of like McArthur returning to the Philipines.. I said "what the heck are you doing"?! because he was standing over this:
.

.
..unfortunately he jumped away like a frog on hot pavement before I could get the photo. The Atrox, about 5' long, was less bothered..
.

.
.. but she disappeared like a dollar into a kid's pocket in mercado Juarez in Matamoros (Mexico) in a bolt-hole nearby before my hyper-ventilating buddy could get the big hook he was carrying into action. These guys that go all geared-up are worthless! Now this next snake is neat, a yellow-phase Oaxacan racer.. and I had seen a normal near there three weeks back..
.

.
Everything else was the usual junk except for two large Indigos hanging out at the old brick culverts on the drainage canal.. they went down too fast to grab or photograph.

Let's get out in the field!

That's a sharp looking serpent. I was imagining how to take that photo and I'm guessing from the angle of that photo that either
A) It took two to take that photo, or
B) You've got one of those digital cameras that allow you to turn the viewer sideways and shoot without facing the shot, or
C)You've got more flexibility in your wrist and forearm than I do.

I like the MacArthur reference but you'll confuse the kids under thirty. They don't teach about him anymore.

Hey John, you're right my partner was holding that snake for the photo.. here's the more normal-appearing Oaxacus from a couple of weeks ago. I'm doing the duty with the camera and the snake in this one. And I suppose I am dating myself with references to historical figures like Mcaurthur.. I'll watch out in future!

All those fine serpents in the southwest. Remarkable. Don't take my joke about MacArthur seriously. That was just happy nostalgia that someone was speaking my language. Keep up the great posts.

Gus, great racer pics. I'd be out herping if I could, but 0*F. is not condusive to it. Maybe some frogs next month...LOL. Hope you find some ratsnakes and/or some milk snakes.
