What do you guys think about using styrofoam in a dart viv?

TheFrogGuy Feb 12, 2005 07:20 PM

Hello, I was just wondering if anybody here has had any of that pink styrofoam from hardware stores exposed in your dart vivariums. I want to make a cage divider out of it. I plan on covering it with a great stuff background. But I just want to know if it's safe.

Thanks!

For the short term this should pose no problem. I don't have any hard facts backing me up but I would think that as the material began to break down in a natural vivarium setup it would release it's possibly toxic components into the soil. (what is styrofoam made of? Is it derivative of fossil fuels like plastic?)
Considering the many other easy alternatives like wood and plexiglass I would choose otherwise.
