The smooth and rough greens both range in IL. They are very hard to find as they blend in very well with the foliage in which they lurk. W/C green snakes usually do not make good pet snakes. Especially for a beginner hobbyist. They tend to stress out very easily and can be finicky eaters. They will eat most soft bodied insects and seem to relish spiders! I had one a few years ago that I kept for a couple of weeks. The only thing it would eat was the large common house spiders!! Not a very good diet for captive snakes, so I released him back into my back yard where he was found.
They are very beautiful snakes, and if you get one from a breeder, then it should be eating meal worms, crickets, and full grown greens can eat pinkies.
If this is your first snake, I would suggest getting something easier to take care of. Such as a corn or king snake, or even a rat snake, as these are very hardy snakes and often readily feed with no problems.
But if you are set on getting a green snake, you should do lots of research on them before getting one.
Good luck
Brian
