anybody else notice that you don't see any really big boas anymore??

darcy Feb 12, 2005 11:30 PM

I have been into snakes since i was 14 and i had a male common boa that was 9feet long and my friends female was 12 feet and like 63lbs. i had to sell my male because I couldn't afford the rabbits in those day's. well I started getting back into snakes a couple of years ago and i began to notice that the average size for most boas is now WAY less than when i was begining. I noticed the same with burmese pythons and Iguanas aswell. I
just thought I'd try and get a few thoughts on the subject.

I have quite a few.
Two around 8-9ft.
Five around 6-7ft.
Quite a few around 3ft........And, then some babies and yearlings.
I think quite a few owners don't want to post their for fear of local ordinances and such. Others don't show the adults because boas "tend" to look darker and less attractive when they are mature. I know of quite a few breeders that don't like to show their adults for just that reason. Or, lastly, their adults are being bred and they don't want to bother them.
Personally, I love seeing them. Nothing beats a BIG snake for me.
They are out there.

I know what you mean. I look at all the nice new morphs and i still would rather see a really big boa over any of the new designer boa's. Thanks for replying.

BTW. This is not my pic. So, hopefully I am not ticking anyone off. It's a great pic! I think the guy in the back is Andy. I can't remember who the guy is in the front.

I think why you don't see as many BIG BOAS theses days is because more people are breeding boas rather than keeping them for pets. In my opinion the more you breed your boa the more you shorten its life span.
It seems that when you breed your boas they only live to around 10 to 12 years some times less. Now in my opinion if you don't breed your boa and keep it for a pet and with proper husbandry it should live to be 25 to 30 years old and in a few cases much older. I believe the oldest boa that lived was 40+ years old.

Here is a picture of Xena my biggest boas. She is 13+ years old, 9' 6" long and 60 lb.
I am 6' 2" tall and 255 lb. in this picture.

As you cann see she is a hand full. LOL

Here is a link to my BIG BOA PAGE.
