Xenochrophis piscator

rearfang Feb 13, 2005 07:31 AM

I was just given a snake that was identified as An Indo-Chinese Ratsnake. On the web I learned that it is apparently a striped version of Xenochropis piscator.

Has anyone got any experience with this species?

No personal hands on with this species, though I have reared an African water snake and some Europeans. My understanding is, they can be treated as our N. Americans. I would however avoid any "cool down" period, unless initiated by the snake itself which might indicate a seasonal change it has recognised. In this case, I would continue to offer both food and a sunning site.

Here in South Florida we usualy don't think about 'cool down' periods unless it's necessary for breeding. With our natives it is a non-issue.

I placed the new snake into a ten gal tank with damp spagnum (there seems to be a medicinal quality to the stuff, so snakes don't get body rot where they would in other wet mediums).

I added a fuzzy Mouse. That quickly became dinner. Interesting snake and quite mellow when handled.
