good egg/bad egg question

pweaver Jul 07, 2003 09:24 AM

One of my hondurans dropped a clutch of 6 eggs about 2 weeks ago. One of the 6 was obviously bad a day or so after laying, but the other 5 looked ok (very bright white). One of them has since developed a dark spot on the end, about the size of a penny, and this weekend I found some white fuzz/mold growing on the dark spot. The rest of the egg is still white. Any opinions on whether an egg like this will typically go bad or not? Anything I can do to hold the mold back, or just let nature take it's course?

I've heard that you can use one of the fungicides intended for things like Athlete's Foot, such as Tinactin. I've never tried it before. I never discard an egg until I'm positive that it's bad.

I had an egg that developed a dark spot just like you described (kingsnake egg), and then a few weeks later the spot started to get fuzzy. I only had some spray liquid "Tinactin" so I sprayed it onto my hand and then wiped the spot. There was no more growth of anything, and a week later the eggs started to pip.

It was curious to me that the egg with the dark spot hatched out the meanest hatchling (pure coincidence) but after he left the egg I examined the area of the dark brown spot... noticed that there was a full second layer of egg material beneath the brown spot. Perhaps it always had a double layer of egg material in that location, so the outer bit got brown and moldy since it wasn't in contact with anything inside the egg.
