I was recently talking with an "old timer" sort of speak who used to always have baby emeralds available. When I asked him what he did to get them he said he had large groups of aprox 3 or 4 males and 8-9 females in outdoor enclosures.
The enclosures were made of a green outdoor fabric that was a fabric used in green houses.
He said in the Miami winter he would simply cover the cage with plastic and have only a few circles about 6x6 for air to come in, and would place red lights on each corner of the cage pointing towards the middle where they would all be resting on the branches absorbing the warmth yet not getting too cold for the species.
He had 5 such set ups and produced about 100 babies a year. I used to buy some of these babies for resale. My question is anybody else have experience in keeping emeralds outside in Florida?
I am in Miami as well, and wanted to try a similar idea.
He said he tried to breed them indoors and didnt get as many results as he did once he put them outside.
I am just wondering what peoples experience with keeping and breeding emeralds outdoors.
Also I plan on doing something similar, but in the winter I wouldn't chance the health of the animals, I would simply bring them inside the facility and keep them cool, but not as cold as they might get outside, then place them outside once the temps are better.
Any thoughts? Ideas?
Thanks
