Great Stuff for an underwater application

drrich2 Feb 13, 2005 09:11 PM

Hi:

Just checking in to see if my understanding about product safety for aquarium use is still accurate. Black Jungle has a turtorial for making a terrarium back wall with GreatStuff, Black Silicone & Driftwood; my idea draws from that.

I want to take a plastic window planter from Wal-mart & make a natural looking planter out of it to use in an aquarium with fish & turtles. It would spend over 99% of the time completely submersed.

The plan:

1.) Take 2 - 3' plastic window planter from Wal-mart.

2.) Take black nylon netting from Wal-mart's material section.

3.) Put nylon netting in planter & sort of 'flow it over' the front so it forms a smooth hill effect on front.

4.) That's the initial mold.

5.) Now, spray GreatStuff on the nylon netting to form a 'mud bank' effect. This is a volume-filling that also forms the base & 'secondary mold.'

6.) Let dry 24 hours.

7.) Smear silicone (G.E. black silicone II) over the dried GreatStuff & press onto that a layer of Bed-A-Beast.

8.) Let dry.

9.) May have to use some gravel in planter-base to counter bouyancy of the GreatStuff; time will tell.

I don't come here often & haven't noticed GreatStuff mentioned much in recent DIY discussions; just wanted to make sure it was still considered safe & non-toxic in the terrarium.

Thanks!

Richard.

Black Jungle reptiles endorses a process that some Europeans have used for the making of living teraria using the "Stuff". Check out the link and let me know if it helps.

That's an interesting project; I'd like to take a crack at doing a tank like that some day. It's the basic idea of what I'm doing but at a whole other level.
